Amancio Ortega was born on March 28, 1936, in Busdongo de Arbas, León, Spain, to Antonio Ortega Rodrguez and Josefa Gaona Hernández, he spent his boyhood in Tolosa, Gipuzkoa.

Ortega started Confecciones Goa in 1972 to offer quilted bathrobes.
In 1975, he and his ex-wife Rosalia Mera (d. 2013) cofounded Inditex, which is best known for its Zara clothes business.
His public presentation in 2000, which served as a warm-up for his company’s IPO on the stock market in 2001.
In 2009, Zara was a part of the Inditex Group, of which Ortega owned 59.29%, and had over 6,000 stores with the brands Zara, Kiddy’s Class, Massimo Dutti, Tempe, Oysho, Zara Home, Stradivarius, Pull and Bear, as well as over 92,000 employees.

Private & early life
Ortega is quite discreet about his personal life, giving only three interviews to journalists as of 2012. No photograph of Ortega has ever been released before 1999.
In 1966, he married Rosalia Mera Goyenechea, and the pair had two children, Marcos and Sandra Ortega Mera, before divorcing in 1986.
Mera died at the age of 69 in August 2013. He married Flora Pérez Marcotte, his second wife, in 2001, and they had a daughter, Marta Ortega Pérez, in 1984.
He is usually seen driving a black Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W221) or a black Mercedes-Benz GL-Class (X166).
