Dell was born in Houston on February 23, 1965, to a Jewish family whose surname commemorates the family’s immigration to the United States.

Lorraine Charlotte, a stockbroker, and Alexander Dell, an orthodontist, were his parents.

Dell’s parents wanted him to be a doctor, so he enrolled in pre-med at the University of Texas in 1983 to appease them.
