Jack Ma was born on September 10, 1964, in the Chinese city of Hangzhou, in the province of Zhejiang, into a low-income household.
His parents were musicians and storytellers on occasion. He met Zhang Ying, also known as Cathy Zhang, a fellow student from the Hangzhou region, during university.
He announced his retirement from Alibaba in September 2018 to focus on educational work, charity, and environmental issues; Daniel Zhang took over as executive chairman the following year.

Jack Ma struggled to attend college later in his life. He failed the Hangzhou Teachers College admission test twice since mathematics was his weak area.
Ma took three years to complete the Chinese admission examinations, which are held once a year. Ma earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Hangzhou Teacher’s Institute (now known as Hangzhou Normal University) in 1988.
Ma was the president of the student council at her previous school. He went on to teach English and international commerce at Hangzhou Dianzi University after graduation.

After graduating from Hangzhou Normal University in 1988, Ma tried for 30 different odd jobs and was rejected by each one.

Ma led the China International Electronic Commerce Center, a department of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, in establishing an information technology firm from 1998 to 1999.
Alibaba said in September 2014 that it will raise about $25 billion in an initial public offering (IPO) on the New York Stock Exchange.
After obtaining the entire $25 billion in the largest initial public offering in US financial history, Alibaba became one of the most valuable technology firms in the world.
Ma made his acting debut in 2017 with Gong Shou Dao, a kung fu short film. It was shot in conjunction with Singles’ Day at the Double 11 Shopping Carnival. In the same year, he took part in a singing competition and danced at Alibaba’s 18th-anniversary celebration.

On Nov. 3, 2020, Hong Kong and Shanghai regulators blocked a proposed IPO of fintech firm Ant Group, in which Ma is the largest individual stakeholder.
Between October 2020 and January 2021, Ma made no public appearances, which coincided with a regulatory crackdown on his enterprises, according to news reports.
Some thought that Ma could have been kidnapped, while others suggested that he might be hiding out willingly. Ma had another public appearance on January 20, 2021, when she spoke to a group of rural teachers via video connection at the annual Rural Teacher Initiative.

Private & early life
Zhang Ying was married shortly after graduation in 1988, and in addition to working as a Chinese teacher, Zhang was active in the early development of Ma’s businesses and became general manager of the main firm until 2004.
Ma Yuankun (Jerry Ma) was born in 1992, and the couple has three children: a boy, Ma Yuankun, a daughter, Ma Yuanbao, and a third kid.
At an early age, he began learning English by interacting with English speakers at Hangzhou International Hotel. Ma would ride his bicycle 27 kilometers (17 miles) to offer tourists tours of the region to improve his English for nine years.
He became pen buddies with one of the foreigners, who dubbed him “Jack” since his Chinese name was difficult to say.
