François Pinault was born on August 21, 1936, in Les Champs-Géraux, a commune in Brittany’s northwestern region.
Pinault was raised in the countryside of France, where he began his career working for his family’s lumber company.
His father worked as a lumber merchant.

Career
In the early 1960s, Pinault began his career in the forestry sector.
In 1963, Pinault created Kering, which began as a wood and construction products business with the support of family and a bank loan from Crédit Lyonnais.
The company changed its name to PPR after becoming public in 1988. PPR’s focus switched to luxury and fashion towards the end of 1999.
Pinault-Printemps-Redoute bought the Yves Saint Laurent firm and a controlling 42 percent interest in the Gucci Group for $3 billion in March 1999.
When Pinault purchased a majority share in Gucci Group in 1999, he shifted the company’s focus to luxury products.
