Celestine “Tina” Knowles, a hairdresser and salon owner, and Mathew Knowles, a Xerox sales manager, gave birth to Beyonce Giselle Knowles on September 4, 1981, in Houston, Texas.

Tina is Louisiana Creole, while Mathew is African American. Solange Knowles, Beyonce’s younger sister, is also a singer and a former Destiny’s Child backup dancer.

Solange and Beyoncé are the only sisters to have albums that charted at No. 1 at the same time.
