Emilia Clarke Biography

Emilia Isobel Euphemia Rose Clarke was born in London on October 23, 1986.

She grew up in the county of Oxfordshire. Peter Clarke, her father, was a theatrical sound engineer from Wolverhampton, and Jennifer Clarke, her mother, was a businesswoman who, as of 2020, is the vice-president for marketing at a worldwide management consulting firm.

On her mother’s side of the family, Clarke is of Indian ethnicity; she revealed in a 2018 interview that her maternal grandmother was the offspring of a secret romance between Clarke’s great-grandmother and an Indian subcontinent man.

Her grandmother concealed her darker complexion with light make-up, which she inherited from her father.

“The idea that she had to disguise her skin color, essentially, and try hard to blend in with everyone else must’ve been really tough,” Clarke says, citing her family’s “history of warriors.”

Clarke revealed in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar that her grandmother “loved India more than she loved England,” and that when she died, she journeyed to India to spread her ashes.

Bennett, Clarke’s older brother, works in the entertainment sector and was a member of the Game of Thrones camera department.

After viewing the musical Show Boat at the age of three, Clarke grew interested in performing.

Her father took her to a West End audition for Neil Simon’s musical The Goodbye Girl when she was 10 years old.

Clarke applied to RADA, LAMDA, and Guildhall after graduation but was rejected.
