Emilia Isobel Euphemia Rose Clarke was born in London on October 23, 1986.
She grew up in the county of Oxfordshire. Peter Clarke, her father, was a theatrical sound engineer from Wolverhampton, and Jennifer Clarke, her mother, was a businesswoman who, as of 2020, is the vice-president for marketing at a worldwide management consulting firm.
On her mother’s side of the family, Clarke is of Indian ethnicity; she revealed in a 2018 interview that her maternal grandmother was the offspring of a secret romance between Clarke’s great-grandmother and an Indian subcontinent man.
Her grandmother concealed her darker complexion with light make-up, which she inherited from her father.
“The idea that she had to disguise her skin color, essentially, and try hard to blend in with everyone else must’ve been really tough,” Clarke says, citing her family’s “history of warriors.”
Clarke revealed in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar that her grandmother “loved India more than she loved England,” and that when she died, she journeyed to India to spread her ashes.

Clarke went to Headington’s Rye St Antony School and Oxford’s St Edward’s School, which she left in 2005.
“I attended expensive boarding schools, but I wasn’t the posh girl at the rich boarding schools,” she said in a 2016 interview with Time Out.
She also noted that the majority of the students at her Oxford boarding school were from traditional homes, making her and several of her classmates feel like outsiders.
She worked and traveled before enrolling in the Drama Centre in London, where she received her bachelor’s degree in 2009.

While still in school, Clarke began acting in theatre performances. While at St Edward’s School, she performed in student performances of Twelfth Night and West Side Story.
She got admitted into Drama Centre London after taking a sabbatical year. Clarke also had an appearance in the 2009 production of Sense, which was co-produced by the Company of Angels and Drama Centre London.

Clarke lives in Islington, a London borough. She bought a property in Venice Beach, California, for $4.64 million in 2016, but sold it in December 2020.
Clarke said in a 2013 interview with Allure that her mother had three instructions for her as a child: “Don’t use drugs, don’t have sex, and don’t touch your eyebrows.”
She said she was bullied as a teenager because of her “ridiculous eyebrows.”
Clarke stated in a 2019 column for The New Yorker that she had experienced a subarachnoid hemorrhage in February 2011 due to a burst aneurysm.
