Halle Berry Biography

Berry was born Maria Halle Berry on August 14, 1966, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Judith Ann, a white English immigrant from Liverpool, and Jerome Jesse Berry, a black man.

At the age of five, her name was formally changed to Halle Maria Berry.

Her parents chose Halle’s Department Store as her middle name, which was a Cleveland icon at the time.

Berry’s mother worked as a mental nurse, and her father worked as a psychiatric ward attendant before becoming a bus driver at the same hospital.

Berry and her elder sister Heidi Berry-Henderson were raised solely by their mother after her parents split when she was four years old.

She has had a strained relationship with her father since infancy, admitting in 1992 that she had no idea if he was still alive.

Berry has described her mother being abused on a regular basis, kicked down the stairs, and smacked in the head with a wine bottle by her father.

She worked at Higbee’s Department Store in the children’s department.

She competed in various beauty pageants in the 1980s, including Miss Teen All American in 1985 and Miss Ohio USA in 1986.

She was the first runner-up to Christy Fichtner of Texas in the 1986 Miss USA pageant.

She expressed her desire to be an entertainer or work in the media during the Miss USA 1986 pageant interview competition.

The judges gave her the highest score for her interview.

In 1986, she was the first African-American Miss World contestant, coming in sixth place behind Trinidad and Tobago’s Giselle Laronde, who was named Miss World.

Career

Berry portrayed the first African American woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in the 1999 HBO biopic Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, and it was a project that Berry originated, co-produced, and battled hard for to come to fruition.

In the cinematic adaptations of the comic book series X-Men (2000) and its sequels, X2 (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), and X-Men: Days of Future Past (2007), Berry played the mutant superhero Storm (2014).

Berry made her cinematic debut in 2001 with Swordfish, in which she had her first topless scene.

Berry received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contributions to the film industry in April 2007, in front of the Kodak Theatre at 6801 Hollywood Boulevard, and by the end of the decade, she had established herself as one of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood, earning an estimated $10 million per film.

Berry starred alongside then-husband Olivier Martinez in the little-known thriller Dark Tide in 2012, and she also led an ensemble cast opposite Tom Hanks and Jim Broadbent in The Wachowskis’ epic science fiction film Cloud Atlas (2012), in which each of the actors played six different characters over five centuries.

Berry signed on to appear in and co-executive produce the CBS drama series Extant in 2014.

She portrayed Sofia, an assassin, in Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, which came out on May 17, 2019.

She is the executive producer of the BET television series Boomerang, which is based on the film in which she appeared, as of February 2019. The first episode of the series aired on February 12, 2019.

Berry made her feature directorial debut with Bruised, in which she plays Jackie Justice, a disgraced MMA fighter who reconnects with her estranged son.

Private & early life

From March 1989 through October 1991, Berry dated Chicago dentist John Ronan. In November 1993, Ronan filed a lawsuit against Berry for $80,000 in unpaid debts that he said helped her establish her career. Berry claimed the money was a gift, but the lawsuit was rejected by the judge because Ronan failed to include Berry as a debtor in his bankruptcy filing in 1992.

Berry claims that a beating from a prior abusive partner ruptured her eardrum and caused her to lose 80 percent of her hearing in her left ear while filming The Last Boy Scout in 1991. She has never revealed the identity of the abuser, only that he was “well-known in Hollywood.” Christopher Williams, her ex-boyfriend, accused Wesley Snipes of being responsible for the event in 2004, stating, “I’m sick of people mistaking me for the man. It was Wesley Snipes, not me, who ruptured her eardrum.”

Berry first saw baseball star David Justice on TV in February 1992, when he was participating in an MTV celebrity baseball event. Berry supplied her phone number to a reporter from Justice’s hometown of Cincinnati after the reporter informed her that Justice was a fan. On January 1, 1993, Berry married Justice soon after midnight. Berry revealed publicly following their divorce in February 1996 that she was so depressed that she pondered suicide. On June 24, 1997, Berry and Justice were legally divorced.

Berry was sentenced to three years of probation, a $13,500 fine, and 200 hours of community service in May 2000 after pleading no contest to charges of fleeing the scene of an automobile accident.

Berry married singer-songwriter Eric Benét, her second husband, on January 24, 2001, after a two-year romance. Benét sought therapy for sex addiction in 2002, and the couple divorced in early October 2003, with the divorce being completed on January 3, 2005.

Berry began dating French-Canadian model Gabriel Aubry in November 2005, after meeting him during a Versace photoshoot. In March 2008, Berry gave birth to their daughter. Berry and Aubry announced their breakup on April 30, 2010, after a few months of dating. Berry and Aubry were involved in a highly publicized custody battle in January 2011, centered primarily on Berry’s desire to move with their daughter from Los Angeles, where Berry and Aubry lived, to France, where French actor Olivier Martinez, whom Berry had begun dating in 2010 after meeting while filming Dark Tide in South Africa, resides. Aubry protested the proposal, claiming that it would disrupt their shared parenting agreement.

Due to Aubry’s concerns, a judge dismissed Berry’s plea to relocate the couple’s daughter to France in November 2012. Aubry and Martinez were both treated at a hospital for injuries following a violent incident at Berry’s home less than two weeks later, on November 22, 2012.

Berry and Martinez announced their engagement in March 2012, and on July 13, 2013, they married in France. Berry gave birth to their baby in October of 2013. The pair announced their divorce in 2015, following two years of marriage. The divorce was said to have been finalized in December 2016, although the lawsuit is still proceeding as of November 2020.

Berry began dating Grammy-winning American musician Van Hunt in 2020, according to her Instagram account.
