Barry David Sanders, the seventh of eleven children, was born on July 16, 1968, in Wichita, Kansas.

His father, William, was a roofer and carpenter, and his mother, Shirley, was the Sanders family’s housekeeper.

Sanders and two of his brothers would work as his father’s roofer’s assistants.

Sanders did not become the starter running back until his senior year when he carried for 274 yards and four touchdowns in his fourth game.

Sanders cut and dodged his way into the end zone on one of those touchdown runs, which Sanders’ high school coach Dale Burkholder described as “one of the finest plays I’ve ever seen by a high school running back.”

He won all-state accolades and was selected an Honorable Mention All-American after rushing for 1,417 yards in the last seven games of the season.

He began his sophomore season as a tailback, but his brother Byron took up the role the next year.
