Jerry Rice Biography

Rice, the sixth of eight children, was born on October 13, 1962, in Crawford, Mississippi.

Rice’s father, Joe, worked as a brick mason, hand-building houses while also working other jobs to support the family.

Joe was described as “intimidating” by Rice in his autobiography Go Long! My Journey Beyond The Game And The Fame, and he confined himself and his siblings to a rigorous lifestyle, routinely administering corporal punishment.

Rice’s mother, Eddie B., reared him while Joe was at work, and after he left, she cleaned the homes of wealthy families.

Rice and his siblings frequently assisted their father in the construction of homes.

Rice went to Oktoc, Mississippi’s B. L. Moor High School. Rice did not participate in sports in high school, despite playing pretend basketball and football games.

He liked to play sandlot football and watch football on TV. Rice’s mother forbade him from joining the football team during his freshman year.

Rice’s quickness pleased the principal, who alerted the school’s football coach, Charles Davis, who offered him a spot on the squad.

Rice was a multi-sport athlete in high school, playing running back, defensive back, and quarterback among others. He was a return specialist at times.

From 1981 to 1984, Rice attended Mississippi Valley State University. Prior to the regular season, Rice attended summer school and freshman orientation at Mississippi Valley State.

NFL scouts were impressed by Rice’s record-breaking season at Mississippi Valley State. His 40-yard sprint time was measured between 4.45 and 4.71 seconds, according to several sources.

Rice was one of 21 rookie players who had not yet signed a contract in July 1985.

He went 8/108 with a touchdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1 of the 1987 season.

In the 1990 season, Rice started all 16 games for the 49ers.

Montana and Young were embroiled in a quarterback controversy during the 1992 season.

He returned to the Super Bowl with the San Francisco 49ers in 1994, catching 112 passes for 1,499 yards and 13 touchdowns.

He set a career-high with 122 receptions for 1,848 yards and 15 touchdowns in 1995; his receiving yardage mark was not broken until Calvin Johnson surpassed it in 2012.

He fully recovered and returned in 1998, catching 82 passes for 1,157 yards and nine touchdowns.

He failed to surpass 1,000 yards receiving in all 16 games for the first time in his career in 1999. He also missed 1,000 yards in his final season with San Francisco, in 2000.

Rice scored his 200th career touchdown against the Denver Broncos on November 11, 2002, passing Walter Payton to become the NFL’s career leader in total yardage.

He was frustrated by Oakland’s decline from an 11–5 record in 2002 to a 4–12 record in 2003.

Rice signed a one-year contract with the Denver Broncos after the 2004 season that paid him $790,000 in total compensation, the lowest contract offer in his 24 years in the league.

He signed a deal with the 49ers in August 2006, allowing him to retire as a member of the team with which he began his NFL career.
