Ajay Piramal was born on August 3, 1955, in Rajasthan, India.

He was born to Gopikisan and Lalita Piramal.

Piramal began working in his family’s textile company, established in 1934 by his grandfather Piramal Chatrabhuj when he was 22 years old.

After his father, Gopikisan Piramal, died in 1979, he lost an older brother to cancer five years later, leading him to take over the firm.

Amity University in India has awarded Piramal an honorary doctorate, as well as an honorary doctor of science from IIT Indore.

Education

Piramal earned a bachelor’s degree in science from Basant Singh Institute and Jai Hind College of Science at the University of Mumbai, and a master’s degree in management studies from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies at the University of Mumbai.

He had participated in the Harvard Business School’s six-week Advanced Management Program in 1992.

Career

Piramal began his career in his family’s textile industry when he was 22 years old in 1977, but went on to amass a pharmaceutical empire through acquisitions.

Piramal purchased Nicholas Laboratories, a multinational company based in Australia, in 1988.

After acquiring the Indian subsidiaries of Roche, Boehringer Mannheim, Rhone Poulenc, ICI, and Hoechst Research Centre, the company is now ranked 5th among Indian pharmaceutical firms.

Crossroads, India’s first big shopping mall, was built in Mumbai from 3 abandoned Piramal factory buildings.

Piramal Enterprises Ltd, which he headed, bought 11% of Vodafone India in two tranches.

The first 5.5% was purchased for Rs 2,856 crore in 2011 and the second for Rs 3,007 crore the next year.

To purchase a 5.5% stake in Vodafone India for INR 30.07 billion ($618 million), bringing its overall stake in the company to 11%.

Piramal paid INR 2,014 crore for a 20% stake in Shriram Capital Ltd., a subsidiary of the Chennai-based Shriram Group, after selling his Vodafone India stake. The deal was made in addition to a 9.9% stake in Shriram Transport Finance Co. Ltd. for INR 1,636 crore.

Piramal Enterprises agreed to sell a 20% stake in its pharmaceutical subsidiary to private equity company The Carlyle Group for $490 million in June 2020.
