Vitalik Buterin Biography

Buterin was born on January 31, 1994, in the Russian city of Kolomna to computer scientists Dmitry Buterin and Natalia Ameline.

He grew up in the neighborhood until he was six years old when his parents moved to Canada in quest of better job possibilities.

He took bronze in the International Olympiad in Informatics in 2012.

In 2013, he traveled to different nations to meet developers who shared his passion for coding.

Later that year, he returned to Toronto and produced a white paper proposing Ethereum.

Buterin was placed in a bright class in grade three of an elementary school in Canada, and he was drawn to mathematics, programming, and economics.

He then went to the Abelard School, a Toronto-based private secondary school.

At the age of 17, Buterin heard about Bitcoin from his father. Buterin went to the University of Waterloo after high school.

He studied advanced classes there and worked as a research assistant for cryptographer Ian Goldberg, who co-founded Off-the-Record Messaging and served on the Tor Project’s board of directors.

He dropped out of university in 2014 after receiving a $100,000 grant from the Thiel Fellowship, a fellowship established by venture entrepreneur Peter Thiel, and started to work full-time on Ethereum.

Bitcoin Magazine

After meeting a person on a bitcoin forum in order to earn bitcoin, Buterin began writing for a newspaper named Bitcoin Weekly in 2011. The owner promised anyone who would write an article for him five bitcoin (about $3.50 at the time).

Buterin contributed to the site until it was forced to close owing to a lack of money.

He was approached by Mihai Alise in September 2011 about co-founding a new print newspaper called Bitcoin Magazine, which he accepted as the first co-founder and contributed to as a key writer.

The first significant journal dedicated to cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin Magazine, began publishing a print edition in 2012 and has been considered to be the first serious publication dedicated to cryptocurrency.

He approached Jed McCaleb for a job at Ripple while working at Bitcoin Magazine, and he accepted. Buterin’s anticipated job fell through because Ripple was unable to secure a visa for him in the United States.

In 2016, he was also a member of the editorial board of Ledger, a peer-reviewed scientific publication that publishes full-length original research articles on cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology.

Buterin is a co-founder and inventor of Ethereum, a “decentralized mining network and software development platform wrapped into one” that allows for the creation of new coins and applications on a single blockchain (a cryptographic transaction ledger).

In November 2013, Buterin published the first white paper describing Ethereum. Buterin had claimed that application development for bitcoin required a scripting language. When he couldn’t get anyone to agree, he advocated creating a new platform with a more broad scripting language.

In late 2013 and early 2014, the Ethereum white paper was widely distributed, and interest in the new technology rose. On the 26th of January, Buterin made a more public announcement about Ethereum at the North American Bitcoin Conference in Miami.

“I am truly grateful to have the opportunity to work in such an interesting and interdisciplinary area of industry, where I have the chance to interact with cryptographers, mathematicians, and economists prominent in their fields, to help build software and tools that already affect tens of thousands of people around the world, and to work on advanced problems in computer science, economics, and philosophy every week,” Buterin said in a statement in 2020 about the Ethereum Project.

Buterin claims that his desire to build decentralized money stems from the nerfing of his World of Warcraft character, notably patch 3.1.0.

On his page, he said, “During the years 2007-2010, I enjoyed playing World of Warcraft, but Blizzard decided to eliminate the damage component from my favorite warlock’s Siphon Life skill.

I sobbed myself to sleep that night, and it was then that I discovered the dangers of centralized services. I quickly made the decision to go.”

Open-source software

Buterin has worked on additional open-source software projects as a developer. He has contributed to Cody Wilson’s DarkWallet, the Bitcoin Python libraries, and Agora, a bitcoin marketplace.
