Early years and growth

As a result, the moniker “Markiplier” was born, a combination of Mark and multiplier. Fischbach’s first series was a walkthrough of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, a video game.

YouTube blocked Fischbach’s AdSense account after he played numerous other game series, including Penumbra and Dead Space, and he started a new channel, markiplierGAME, on May 26, 2012.

The MarkiplierGAME channel was ranked 61 on NewMediaRockstars’ Top 100 Channels list in 2014.

Fischbach revealed that he will be relocating to Los Angeles, California, in order to be closer to additional resources for his YouTube channel, such as the YouTube Space and other content makers, later that year.

He started his legendary Five Nights at Freddy’s playing in August 2014, and it quickly became his most popular playthrough to date, with the first section having over 100 million views as of February 2022.

He began living with fellow YouTubers Daniel Kyre and Ryan Magee, who founded and run the YouTube sketch comedy and music channel Cyndago, in 2015.

He was featured in YouTube Rewind and co-hosted the 2015 South by Southwest Gaming Awards alongside Janet Varney, the voice of Korra in The Legend of Korra.

Throughout 2016, Fischbach shifted his concentration to comedic skits, demonstrating his interest in improvisational theatre. In 2017, Fischbach released A Date with Markiplier, an interactive Choose Your Own Adventure-style film that was favourably appreciated by fans. Fischbach revealed on March 29, 2018, that his YouTube channel had topped 20 million followers.

Fischbach revealed in October 2019 that A Heist with Markiplier, a YouTube Originals production, will be a new Choose Your Own Adventure-style narrative similar to A Date With Markiplier.

On November 14, 2020, at 12:00 a.m. PST, Fischbach and Nestor removed the channel after a last 12-hour live feed that peaked at over 1.5 million concurrent viewers.
