Drake Biography

Aubrey Drake Graham was born in Toronto, Ontario, on October 24, 1986.

Dennis Graham, his father, is African-American and a devout Catholic from Memphis, Tennessee, who worked as a drummer with country singer Jerry Lee Lewis. Sandra “Sandi” Graham, his mother, is a Canadian with Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry who worked as an English teacher and florist.

Dennis Graham was in attendance at Club Bluenote in Toronto, where he met Sandra Sher.

Drake is a dual citizen of the United States and Canada, with his father being an American citizen.

Graham, prior to his incarceration, would travel to Toronto every summer and bring Drake to Memphis. Later, his father worked on a music video for the song “Drake’s Dad” with the Canadian band Arkells.

Graham said in an interview that Drake’s claims that he was an absent father were embellishments to sell records, which Drake adamantly disputes.

Drake grew up in two different Toronto neighborhoods. He played minor hockey with the Weston Red Wings on Weston Road in the city’s working-class west end until he was in sixth grade.

In the year 2000, he relocated to Forest Hill, one of the city’s more affluent neighborhoods.

Education

He was a bar mitzvah and attended a Jewish day school when he was younger.

He was a student at Forest Hill Collegiate Institute, where he showed an interest in the arts by acting for the first time while still a student.

Later, in the city’s multicultural Oakwood–Vaughan neighborhood, he attended Vaughan Road Academy.

Drake regarded the school as “not by any means the easiest school to attend” because of the neighborhood’s impoverished status.

He was bullied at school because of his racial and religious heritage, and he dropped out after discovering that his demanding educational schedule was hindering his growing acting career.

In October of 2012, he received his diploma.

Career

Drake was introduced to an acting agent’s father by a high school classmate when he was 15, anxious to start his career as an actor.

He self-released his debut mixtape, Room for Improvement, in 2006, after being musically inspired by Jay-Z and Clipse.

He released his third mixtape, So Far Gone, in 2009. It featured Lil Wayne, Trey Songz, Omarion, Lloyd, and Bun B and was made available for free download through his OVO blog website.

Thank Me Later, Drake’s debut album was supposed to be released in late 2008, but it was pushed back twice, first to March 2010 and then to May 25, 2010.

He was in talks to join Eva Green and Susan Sarandon in Nicholas Jarecki’s Arbitrage in January 2011, however, he ultimately decided not to star in the film in order to focus on the record.

He released “Enough Said” on August 5, 2012, featuring American recording artist Aaliyah and Drake’s own additional vocals.

He said in January 2013 that the first song off his third album would be released towards the end of the 55th Annual Grammy Awards.

Drake was a featured artist on Romeo Santos’ song “Odio” in 2014, and he performed in Spanish.

He published If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late on iTunes without warning on February 12, 2015.

He revealed in January 2016 that his fourth studio album will be released in the spring, and later that month, he released the promotional single “Summer Sixteen.”

Despite numerous obstacles, Drake announced the release of More Life on March 18, 2017, via a series of different Instagram video promotions.

Drake’s 70th top 40 entry came as a result of his appearance on Migos’ “Walk It Talk It,” which debuted at number eighteen and peaked at number 10. On February 9, 2018, he was featured on BlocBoy JB’s debut single “Look Alive,” which was released.

At the 61st Annual Grammy Awards in February 2019, he won his fourth Grammy Award for Best Rap Song for “God’s Plan.”

On December 24, 2019, Drake released the song “War” along with a music video that was praised for its UK drill-inspired instrumental.

Drake’s commercial mixtape Dark Lane Demo Tapes was released on May 1, 2020, and featured guest performances from Chris Brown, Future, Young Thug, Fivio Foreign, Playboi Carti, and Sosa Geek.

He became the first artist to reach 50 billion cumulative Spotify streams in January 2021.
