Abel Makkonen Tesfaye[a] was born in Toronto, Ontario, to Ethiopian immigrants Makkonen Tesfaye and Samrawit Hailu on February 16, 1990.

Private & early life
In early 2015, Tesfaye began dating American model Bella Hadid.
The pair initially appeared together in April at Coachella, and a few months later, Hadid participated in his music video for “In the Night.”
At the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, they made their red carpet debut as a couple. Due to their conflicting schedules, the couple split up in November 2016.
Tesfaye began dating Selena Gomez, an American singer, and actress, in January 2017.
