Kiran Mazumdar was born in Pune, Maharashtra, to Gujarati parents on March 23, 1953.
Education
She attended Bishop Cotton Girl’s High School in Bangalore and graduated in 1968. She then went to Mount Carmel College in Bangalore, a women’s college affiliated with Bangalore University that offers pre-university courses.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in zoology from Bangalore University in 1973 after studying biology and zoology. Mazumdar had hoped to attend medical school but was unable to do so due to a lack of funding.
Mazumdar-Shaw sponsored the creation and implementation of a basic mathematics textbook in Kannada schools in 2006, in partnership with McMillan India Limited and teacher Prathima Rao.
In 2009, she co-founded the Biocon Cell for Innovation Management at the Indian School of Business with Prasad Kaipa to finance a multi-year research program.
Career
Leslie Auchincloss, the founder of Biocon Biochemicals Limited in Cork, Ireland, met Mazumdar before she could even move. Auchincloss’ company made enzymes for the brewing, food processing, and textile industries. Auchincloss was looking for an Indian entrepreneur to help them set up a subsidiary in the country.
Her company has successfully entered the competitive US biosimilars market, attracting investors’ interest.
In Malaysia’s Johor city, the company has sold 3 billion doses of insulin and operates Asia’s largest insulin factory.
Biocon has obtained approval from the Indian government to perform phase 4 trials for its drug Itolizumab, which could be used to treat Covid-19.
Private & early life
Rajendra Mazumdar, her father, was the head brewmaster at United Breweries.
He suggested she study fermentation science and train to be a brewmaster, a traditionally male-dominated profession.
Mazumdar studied malting and brewing at Ballarat College, Melbourne University in Australia.
She was the only woman participating in the brewing course in 1974, and she placed first in her class.
In 1975, she earned her master’s degree.
She was a trainee brewer at Carlton and United Breweries in Melbourne, as well as a trainee maltster at Barrett Brothers and Burston.
Between 1975 and 1977, she served as a technical consultant for Jupiter Breweries Limited in Calcutta and as a technical manager for Standard Maltings Corporation in Baroda.
When she inquired about the possibility of furthering her career in Bangalore or Delhi, she was told that “it’s a man’s job” and that she would not be hired as a master brewer in India.
She started looking for work abroad and was offered a job in Scotland.
