Dinklage was born on June 11, 1969, in the Jersey Shore region of New Jersey, to insurance salesman John Carl Dinklage and elementary-school music teacher Diane Dinklage.
He grew raised in the historic Brookside neighborhood of Mendham Township with his parents and elder brother, Jonathan, of German and Irish origin.
He is the only person in his family that has achondroplasia.
Dinklage and his brother used to perform puppet musicals for their neighbors when they were kids.
He has referred to his brother Jonathan as the “true performer of the family,” claiming that his brother’s passion for the violin was the only thing keeping him from pursuing acting.
Dinklage made his stage debut in a fifth-grade rendition of The Velveteen Rabbit.

Dinklage married theatre director Erica Schmidt in 2005. They have two children and keep their personal life secret. In 2011, their daughter was born. In 2017, a second kid was born.
Dinklage’s face was wounded in the early 1990s while he was a member of Whizzy, a “punk-funk-rap” band. It left him with a scar that ran from his neck to his brow. He was performing at New York City’s CBGB bar when he was accidently kneed in the face and began bleeding on stage.
Dinklage defined himself as a lapsed Catholic in 2008. Dinklage has been a vegetarian since he was 16 years old.
He is an animal rights activist who supports Farm Sanctuary and has acted as a spokesperson for the organization’s Walk for Farm Animals.
