Anthony Dwane Mackie is an actor from the United States.

Mackie made his acting debut in the semi-biographical drama film 8 Mile (2002); he was later nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Actor for his performance in the LGBT drama Brother to Brother (2004).

Mackie participated in Half Nelson (2006) and Eagle Eye (2008) and was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal in The Hurt Locker.

He played Tupac Shakur in Notorious (2009) and went on to appear in Night Catches Us (2010), The Adjustment Bureau, and Real Steel.

Mackie was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on September 23, 1978, to Martha and Willie Mackie Sr., a carpenter who founded the roofing company Mackie Roofing.

Calvin Mackie, his brother, is a former Tulane University assistant professor of engineering who currently works for the Louisiana Recovery Authority.

Mackie graduated from the high school acting program at the North Carolina School of the Arts (NCSA) in 1997 after attending Warren Easton Sr High School and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA).

Later, he graduated from the Juilliard School’s Drama Division as a member of Group 30 (1997–2001), with Tracie Thoms and Lee Pace.

Career

In 2002, Mackie appeared as Don Cheadle’s understudy in Suzan-Lori Parks’ play Topdog/Underdog and earned an OBIE Award for his performance in Carl Hancock Rux’s play Talk.

Mackie appeared in Half Nelson and Crossover, We Are Marshall in 2006.

Mackie appeared in three August Wilson plays at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC in March 2008: Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Fences, and Jitney – all as part of “August Wilson’s 20th Century,” a month-long presentation of ten staged readings of Wilson’s “Century Cycle.”

Private & early life

Mackie married his long-term lover and childhood sweetheart Sheletta Chapital in 2014. In 2018, they divorced. The couple is the parents of four children.

In the summer of 2011, Mackie established NoBar in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. He intended to build a second NoBar in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in 2013, however, all NoBar sites were shuttered in 2015.
