Rudd was born on April 6, 1969, in Passaic, New Jersey, to Jewish parents from England.
Michael Rudd (1943–2008), his father, was a historical tour guide and TWA vice president.
Gloria Irene Granville, his mother, worked as a sales manager at KCMO-TV in Kansas City, Missouri.
His parents were both from London, his father from Edgware, and his mother from Surbiton, and both were derived from Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants from Belarus, Poland, and Russia who came to England.
Rudd’s grandpa changed his paternal family’s surname, Rudnitsky, to Rudd, and his maternal family’s surname, Goldstein, to Rudd; his parents were second cousins. Rudd celebrated his Bar Mitzvah in Ontario, Canada.
He grew up reading the Scottish comics The Beano and The Dandy, which he received from his uncle in the United Kingdom.
Rudd’s family relocated to Lenexa, Kansas, when he was ten years old.
His family also spent three years in Anaheim, California, due to his father’s profession.
Education
Rudd attended Broadmoor Junior High School in Kansas City and Shawnee Mission West High School in Shawnee Mission, Kansas.
He majored in drama at the University of Kansas and was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity’s Nu Chapter.
With fellow actor Matthew Lillard, he trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
He also studied Jacobean drama for three months at the British American Drama Academy in Oxford.
He worked as a DJ at bar mitzvahs while attending acting school.
He did a number of odd jobs after college, including glazing hams at the Holiday Ham Company in Overland Park, Kansas.
Career
Rudd made his acting debut in 1992 as Kirby Quimby Philby in the television drama Sisters.
He appears in six episodes of Wild Oats in 1994.
Rudd left Sisters in 1995 to star alongside Alicia Silverstone in the comedic picture Clueless.
In 2002, he was cast in the comedy Friends as Mike Hannigan, who dates and eventually marries Lisa Kudrow’s Phoebe Buffay.
In 2004, he began working with director/producer Judd Apatow, first on the film Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy as Brian Fantana, directed by Apatow and starring Steve Carell, David Koechner, and Will Ferrell, and again in 2005 in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, directed by Apatow and starring Carell and Seth Rogen.
He appeared in The Oh in Ohio and The Ten in 2007, reuniting with David Wain and Michael Showalter, and then in Over Her Dead Body the following year alongside Eva Longoria.
Rudd starred alongside Jason Segel in I Love You Man in 2009, in which he and Segel play friends who bond over their mutual love of the rock band Rush.
For the first time since The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Rudd reunited with Steve Carell in the Jay Roach-directed comedy Dinner for Schmucks in 2010.
Rudd earned the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Guest Performer in a Comedy Series for his appearance as Bobby Newport, a candidate for City Council and a competitor of Amy Poehler’s character Leslie Knope, in four episodes of NBC’s Parks and Recreation in 2012.

Private & early life
Rudd married Julie Yaeger in 2003, after meeting her at his publicist’s office. Since then, Yaeger has worked as a screenwriter and producer. Their two children, son Jack Sullivan, born in 2006, and daughter Darby, born in 2010, reside with them in Rhinebeck, New York.
On July 1, 2015, Rudd was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. On Hollywood Boulevard’s mile-long strip of plaques, he revealed the 2,554th star.
Rudd is a supporter of the Stuttering Association for the Young (SAY), a non-profit committed to assisting stuttering young people. On January 22, 2018, he held the 6th Annual All-Star Bowling Benefit.
He told Vanity Fair that after playing a character who stammered in a play, he became a champion for stuttering awareness. He’s also the originator of The Big Slick, a celebrity sporting event held in June in Kansas City to benefit the Children’s Mercy Hospital.
Rudd and fellow actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan have been co-owners of Samuel’s Sweet Shop in Rhinebeck, New York, since 2014. They saved the business from shutting down when the former owner, a friend of theirs, died unexpectedly.
