Paul Rudd Biography

Rudd was born on April 6, 1969, in Passaic, New Jersey, to Jewish parents from England.

Michael Rudd (1943–2008), his father, was a historical tour guide and TWA vice president.

Gloria Irene Granville, his mother, worked as a sales manager at KCMO-TV in Kansas City, Missouri.

His parents were both from London, his father from Edgware, and his mother from Surbiton, and both were derived from Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants from Belarus, Poland, and Russia who came to England.

Rudd’s grandpa changed his paternal family’s surname, Rudnitsky, to Rudd, and his maternal family’s surname, Goldstein, to Rudd; his parents were second cousins. Rudd celebrated his Bar Mitzvah in Ontario, Canada.

He grew up reading the Scottish comics The Beano and The Dandy, which he received from his uncle in the United Kingdom.

Rudd’s family relocated to Lenexa, Kansas, when he was ten years old.

His family also spent three years in Anaheim, California, due to his father’s profession.

Education

Rudd attended Broadmoor Junior High School in Kansas City and Shawnee Mission West High School in Shawnee Mission, Kansas.

He majored in drama at the University of Kansas and was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity’s Nu Chapter.

With fellow actor Matthew Lillard, he trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

He also studied Jacobean drama for three months at the British American Drama Academy in Oxford.

He worked as a DJ at bar mitzvahs while attending acting school.

He did a number of odd jobs after college, including glazing hams at the Holiday Ham Company in Overland Park, Kansas.

Career

Rudd made his acting debut in 1992 as Kirby Quimby Philby in the television drama Sisters.

He appears in six episodes of Wild Oats in 1994.

Rudd left Sisters in 1995 to star alongside Alicia Silverstone in the comedic picture Clueless.

In 2002, he was cast in the comedy Friends as Mike Hannigan, who dates and eventually marries Lisa Kudrow’s Phoebe Buffay.

In 2004, he began working with director/producer Judd Apatow, first on the film Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy as Brian Fantana, directed by Apatow and starring Steve Carell, David Koechner, and Will Ferrell, and again in 2005 in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, directed by Apatow and starring Carell and Seth Rogen.

He appeared in The Oh in Ohio and The Ten in 2007, reuniting with David Wain and Michael Showalter, and then in Over Her Dead Body the following year alongside Eva Longoria.

Rudd starred alongside Jason Segel in I Love You Man in 2009, in which he and Segel play friends who bond over their mutual love of the rock band Rush.

For the first time since The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Rudd reunited with Steve Carell in the Jay Roach-directed comedy Dinner for Schmucks in 2010.

Rudd earned the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Guest Performer in a Comedy Series for his appearance as Bobby Newport, a candidate for City Council and a competitor of Amy Poehler’s character Leslie Knope, in four episodes of NBC’s Parks and Recreation in 2012.

Rudd was formally announced as a cast member in the 2015 Marvel picture Ant-Man on December 19, 2013.

In 2016, he starred opposite Selena Gomez in the comedy-drama The Fundamentals of Caring and gave his voice to the animated features The Little Prince and Sausage Party.

Rudd and Aisling Bea were cast in Netflix’s comedy series Living with Yourself in August 2018.

When advertising his projects on late-night comedy shows hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien from 2004 until 2021, Rudd would describe the footage that was going to be aired, but then switch to a clip from the 1988 film Mac and Me instead.
