Caine was born Maurice Joseph Micklewhite on March 14, 1933, in Rotherhithe, London, England, at St Olave’s Hospital.

His mother, Ellen Frances Marie, was an English chef and charwoman, and his father, Maurice Joseph Micklewhite (1899–1956), was a Romani, English, and Irish fish market, porter.

He was raised in the Protestant religion of his mother.

Caine had a younger full brother, Stanley Micklewhite, and an older maternal half-brother, David William Burchell.

He grew raised in Southwark, London, and was moved 100 miles (160 kilometers) north during WWII to North Runcton, near King’s Lynn, Norfolk, where he had a pet carthorse named Lottie.

Caine played the father of the ugly sisters in Cinderella in a school play when he was ten years old.

His fly was undone, and he received a chuckle, so he began behaving as a result of the laugh.

Caine received a scholarship at Hackney Downs School after passing his eleven-plus exams in 1944.

He transferred to Wilson’s Grammar School in Camberwell (now Wilson’s School in Wallington, London) after a year there, when he finished at 16 with a School Certificate in six subjects.

Career

Caine was drafted into the British Army’s Royal Fusiliers from 1952 and 1954, serving first at the British Army of the Rhine Headquarters in Iserlohn, West Germany, and then on active duty during the Korean War.

Caine began his acting career at the Carfax Electric Theatre in Horsham, Sussex, when he replied to advertising in The Stage for an assistant stage manager who would also do modest walk-on parts with the Horsham-based Westminster Repertory Company.

After his regional apprenticeship, his career brought him to London in 1954, when his agency warned him that there was already a Michael White performing as an actor in London and that he needed to come up with a new name right away.
