M. G. George Muthoot was born on November 2, 1949, in (Kozhencherry), Pathanamthitta, Kerala.
He is the grandson of Muthoot Ninan Mathai, founder of the Muthoot Company, and the third son of M. George Muthoot, founder of the Muthoot Group’s financial services arm.
In 2011, Forbes Asia Magazine ranked him as India’s 50th richest man, and according to Forbes’ India’s Richest list 2019, he is now ranked 44th.
Education
He earned a Mechanical Engineering degree from the Manipal Institute of Technology, with a focus on automobiles and air conditioning.
Career
Muthoot’s first job was as an office worker at the family bank. He was appointed managing director of the bank in 1979.
In February 1993, he was named chairman of the Muthoot Group.
When he took over Muthoot’s operations, the company had 31 locations in four states: Kerala, Chandigarh, Haryana, and Delhi.
As of May 2009, the Group had 4433 subsidiaries and a yearly turnover of $4.5 billion (Rs. 255 billion).
He was also a member of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry’s (FICCI) National Executive Committee and the Chairman of the FICCI Kerala State Council.
Private & early life
Muthoot was married to Sara George Muthoot, the Director of New Delhi’s St. George’s High School.
They are the parents of three sons.
Their eldest son, George M. George, is the Group’s Executive Director.
Their youngest son, Alexander George, is the Group’s Director.
Paul Muthoot George, their second son, was assassinated in 2009.
Death
M. G. George Muthoot died on March 5, 2021, at the age of 71, in a Delhi private hospital.
According to media sources, he died on March 5, 2021, after falling from the 4th floor of his Delhi home.
The incident is reportedly being investigated by Delhi police.
His body was returned to his hometown and buried there with full state honors.
