Private & early life

On June 13, 2014, Brooks married fellow wrestler April Mendez, popularly known as AJ Lee. He is an atheist who has spoken out in favor of LGBT rights and same-gender marriage.

He lives a straight-edge lifestyle, just like his wrestling image. Brooks formerly worked at All American Comics.

WWE doctor Christopher Amann filed a defamation lawsuit against Brooks and Scott Colton in February 2015, alleging that Brooks made false claims of medical misconduct on an episode of Colton’s podcast (see above).

Amann was seeking $4 million in compensatory damages as well as an unknown sum in punitive damages. In support of Amann, WWE released a statement and a video.

The matter proceeded to trial in 2018, and Brooks and Colton were found not guilty by a jury.

Colton sued Brooks in August 2018, alleging breach of contract and fraud as a result of Brooks’ alleged agreement and subsequent reluctance to pay Colton’s legal expenses for the Amann case. Colton asked for $200,000 in compensatory damages and $1 million in punitive penalties.

In June 2019, Brooks filed a complaint against Colton for $600,000 plus expenses.

In September of this year, both claims were resolved and dropped. The deal did not include any cash compensation, according to PWInsider.
