K. L. Rahul and Karun Nair were teammates at Bishop Cotton Boys’ School and Jain University in Bangalore, where Agarwal studied.
Career
Domestic career
He made his first triple century in first-class cricket in November 2017, when he batted for Karnataka against Maharashtra in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy, making 304 not out.
The Kings XI Punjab purchased him in the 2018 IPL auction in January 2018. With 723 runs in eight matches in the 2017–18 Vijay Hazare Trophy, he was the leading run-scorer in February 2018.
With 251 runs in seven matches, he was Karnataka’s best run-scorer in the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Mayank hit his first Indian Premier League century for Kings XI Punjab against Rajasthan Royals in Sharjah Cricket Stadium on September 27, 2020.
On 2 May 2021, Agarwal became the Punjab Kings’ 13th captain, captaining the team against the Delhi Capitals in the absence of usual skipper KL Rahul, who had appendicitis surgery.
Mayank was retained by Punjab Kings for INR 12 crore (US$1.6 million) ahead of the IPL 2022 season.
On February 28, 2022, he was named captain of the Punjab Kings, making him the franchise’s 12th full-time captain.
International career
He was picked in India’s Test team for their series against the West Indies in September 2018, however, he did not participate.
In the first Test match against South Africa in October 2019, Agarwal achieved his first Test century.
Mayank Agarwal made his second double century in only his eighth Test match, against Bangladesh, in Indore in November 2019, with 243 in 330 deliveries with eight sixes, which is his current highest total.
Mayank Agarwal scored 857 runs in the inaugural WTC cycle, the fourth-highest total for an Indian batsman, however, he was replaced by Gill after failing in three matches in Australia.
Due to the unavailability of a few players due to covid and personal issues, Agarwal was called in as a replacement for the ODIs against the West Indies in February 2022.
