Jerry Seinfeld Biography

Seinfeld was born on April 29, 1954, in the borough of Brooklyn, New York City.

Kálmán Seinfeld (1918–1985), his father, was of Hungarian-Jewish heritage and amassed a collection of jokes while serving in World War II.

Betty and her parents, Selim and Salha Hosni, were Syrian Jews who came from Aleppo.

When they moved to the United States in 1917, they declared their nationality as Turkish because Syria was still part of the Ottoman Empire. Carolyn Seinfeld is Seinfeld’s older sister.

Evan Seinfeld, a musician, and actor, is Seinfeld’s second cousin.

He volunteered at Israel’s Kibbutz Sa’ar when he was 16 years old.

Salha’s mother, Garez Dayan, was a descendant of the illustrious Dayan rabbinic dynasty, which can trace its paternal genealogy back to the Medieval Exilarchs, and from the Exilarchs to the Biblical King David.

Seinfeld grew raised in Massapequa, New York, and attended Long Island’s Massapequa High School.

He began his education at the State University of New York at Oswego, then went to Queens College, City University of New York, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in communications and drama.

Early in one’s career

After brief appearances in college shows, Seinfeld acquired an interest in stand-up comedy.

While at Queens College, he performed at Budd Friedman’s Improv Club on open-mic nights. Following graduation in 1976, he auditioned for an open-mic night at Catch a Rising Star in New York City, which led to an appearance in a Rodney Dangerfield HBO special.

He had a brief recurring part on the sitcom Benson in 1980, like Frankie, a mail-delivery kid who no one wants to hear his comedic routines. Due to creative disputes, Seinfeld was unceremoniously sacked from the program.

According to Seinfeld, he did not find out he had been sacked until he arrived for a read-through session for an episode and discovered there was no script for him.

Seinfeld had a successful debut on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in May 1981, dazzling Carson and the crowd, which led to more appearances on that and other shows, including Late Night with David Letterman.

His debut one-hour special, Stand-Up Confidential, was broadcast live on HBO on September 5, 1987.

In 1988, Seinfeld and Larry David co-created The Seinfeld Chronicles on NBC. To prevent confusion with the short-lived teen sitcom The Marshall Chronicles, the show was renamed, Seinfeld.

It was the most-viewed sitcom on American television by the third season. The show’s final episode aired in 1998, and it has since become a popular syndicated rerun.

Along with Seinfeld, the episode included Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Michael Richards, and Jason Alexander, all of whom had previously appeared on Saturday Night Live. Larry David’s caricature, George, was played by Alexander. Seinfeld is the only actor who has appeared in every episode.

The Abbott and Costello Program, a 1950s sitcom, impacted Seinfeld’s show, according to him. Seinfeld recognized Jean Shepherd as an inspiration in the “Seinfeld Season 6” DVD collection, remarking on the episode “The Gymnast,” adding, “He really molded my entire comic sensibility—I learned how to do comedy from Jean Shepherd.”

The former Seinfeld cast and crew provided audio commentary for episodes of the show’s DVD releases from 2004 to 2007.

Deal with Netflix

Seinfeld struck a contract with Netflix that includes the streaming of Seinfeld and Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, as well as two new Seinfeld stand-up specials and the production of written and non-scripted comedic programs for Netflix.

Jerry Before Seinfeld, a stand-up comedy special, premiered on Netflix on September 19, 2017. The show follows the comic as he does a stand-up act at Comic Strip Live, the New York City comedy club where he began his career.

Documentary clips and his stand-up special are intercut throughout the show. The program was eventually published as an LP, CD, and digital album, and received a Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album in 2018.

In 2020, Netflix announced that 23 Hours to Kill, Seinfeld’s first original stand-up special in 22 years, will be released. On May 5, the special debuted on the streaming service.

Private & early life

Seinfeld is a Mets fan and refers to Steve Somers’ show on WFAN-AM, a sports talk radio station, as “Jerry from Queens” on occasion. On June 23, 2010, on SportsNet New York, Seinfeld called four innings of a Mets game, reuniting with commentator Keith Hernandez, who starred in the Seinfeld two-part episode “The Boyfriend.”

Seinfeld stated in a 2014 interview with NBC News that he felt he was on the autistic spectrum. He then explained that he is not autistic and was remarking on a play on the disease that he “associated to […] on some level” after receiving backlash for his purported self-diagnosis.

Seinfeld has given a number of political contributions, notably to the presidential campaigns of George W. Bush and Al Gore in 2000, as well as to four Democratic Party primary candidates in 2000 and 2004.

Marriage and early relationships

Seinfeld dated Carol Leifer years before he developed the show. She was a fellow comic and one of the inspirations for Elaine Benes from Seinfeld. He told how he got engaged in 1984 but called it off on national television with sex therapist and talk show presenter Dr. Ruth Westheimer.

When Seinfeld was 38 years old, he began a love connection with Shoshanna Lonstein, who was significantly younger at the time, 17 years old. Spy Magazine mocked her youthful age by referring to her as “a legal voter” early in their relationship.

Before their relationship ended, they dated for four years, from 1993 to 1997. She went from GW to UCLA in part to be with Seinfeld, and the relationship ended due to her missing New York City and continuous press scrutiny.

Seinfeld met Jessica Sklar, a public relations consultant for Tommy Hilfiger, in August 1998 at a Reebok Sports Club. She had just returned from a three-week honeymoon in Italy with her then-husband Eric Nederlander, a theatrical producer, and scion of a theater-owning dynasty.

Seinfeld, unaware of Sklar’s married status, invited her out. “I told him I didn’t believe this was the best moment for me to be connected with anyone…”

Sklar remarked when she finally told Seinfeld about her dating status. Sklar filed for divorce two months later and kept dating Seinfeld. On December 25, 1999, the couple tied the knot.

The best man at the wedding was comedian George Wallace. After reports of Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld’s interest in Billy Joel’s mansion in Amagansett, Long Island, went public in 2000, the pair purchased it for US$32 million. The Seinfelds have two boys and one daughter.
