Shinzo Abe was a Japanese politician who was Prime Minister of Japan and President of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) from 2006 to 2007, and then again from 2012 to 2020.

He held the record for the longest tenure as Prime Minister of Japan. Abe previously served as Chief Cabinet Secretary under Junichiro Koizumi from 2005 to 2006, and he was briefly the opposition leader in 2012.

Shinzo Abe was born on September 21, 1954, in Shinjuku, Tokyo, to a renowned political family.

Although he desired to be a filmmaker as a child, Abe’s family background pushed him along a political path.

Shintaro Abe, his father, was a member of the House of Representatives from 1958 to 1991, serving as Chief Cabinet Secretary, Minister of International Trade and Industry, and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Nobusuke Kishi, Abe’s maternal grandfather, was the de facto “economy king” of occupied China and Manchukuo, a Japanese puppet state founded in Northern China following the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in the lead-up to the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II.

Abe went to Seikei Elementary School, as well as Seikei Junior and Senior High Schools.

In 1987, Abe married Akie Matsuzaki, a socialite, and former radio disc jockey.
