Shah Khan was born in New Delhi, to a Muslim family on November 2, 1965.
Meer Taj Mohammed Khan, Khan’s father, was a Peshawar-based Indian independence activist who worked with the Khudai Khidmatgar.
His father owned many businesses, including a bakery, and the family lived in leased apartments in the middle class.
Lateef Fatima Khan, Khan’s mother, was the daughter of a senior government engineer.
In 1959, his parents married.

Khan went to St. Columba’s School in central Delhi, where he excelled in both academics and sports like hockey and football, earning the school’s highest distinction, the Sword of Honour.

Khan’s first starring role was in Lekh Tandon’s television series Dil Dariya, which started filming in 1988, but due to production delays, his television debut was later in Raj Kumar Kapoor’s 1989 series Fauji.
Khan earned the most praise for playing villains in two box office successes in 1993: an obsessed lover in Darr and a rapist in Baazigar.
Khan played a love-struck singer opposite Deepak Tijori and Suchitra Krishnamurthy in Kundan Shah’s comedy-drama film Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa in 1994, which he later said was his favorite character.

After a six-year courtship, he married Gauri Chibber, a Punjabi Hindu, in a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony on October 25, 1991. They have a son named Aryan, who was born in 1997, and a daughter named Suhana was born in 2000.
Khan purchased ownership rights to the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise in the Twenty20 cricket tournament Indian Premier League (IPL) for US$75.09 million in 2008, in collaboration with Juhi Chawla and her husband Jay Mehta (KKR).

They welcomed their 3rd child, a son named AbRam who was born to a surrogate mother, in 2013.
Both of Khan’s older children have shown an interest in working in the entertainment industry; Aryan, who is studying film at the USC School of Cinematic Arts in California, wants to be a writer-director, while Suhana, who worked as an assistant director on Khan’s film Zero (2018), is studying drama and acting at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
