Phil Knight biography

Phil Knight was born on February 24, 1938, raised in Portland, Oregon, by his father Bill Knight, a lawyer who later became a newspaper publisher, and his mother, Lota Cloy (Hatfield) Knight.

While working Knight went to the rival Oregonian, where he worked the morning shift tabulating sports scores and ran home the full seven miles every morning.

His best as a middle-distance runner at Oregon was 4 minutes, 13 seconds.

At the University of Oregon, he raced track for Bill Bowerman, with whom he would later co-found Nike.

Education

Knight attended Cleveland High School in the Portland suburb of Eastmoreland.

Knight is a Stanford Graduate School of Business and University of Oregon graduate.

Knight continued his studies at the University of Oregon in Eugene, where he was a sportswriter for the Oregon Daily Emerald.

He is a graduating member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.

Career

Knight worked as a CPA for Coopers & Lybrand and then Price Waterhouse before founding Blue Ribbon Sports, eventually known as Nike.

His goal was to bring high-quality, low-cost running shoes from Japan to the United States.

In Kobe, Japan he found Tiger brand running shoes, which were made by the Onitsuka Co., which is now known as Asics.

When Knight received the shoe samples, he shipped two pairs to Bowerman at the University of Oregon in the hopes of securing a sale.

Knight’s first sales were made at track meetings around the Pacific Northwest.

Knight was able to work full-time with Blue Ribbon Sports in 1969.

Nike’s first employee, Jeff Johnson, offered the name “Nike,” after the Greek winged goddess of victory, and Blue Ribbon Sports was renamed Nike in 1978.

Graphic design student Carolyn Davidson was commissioned for $35 to create Nike’s “swoosh” logo, which is today regarded as one of the most expensive logos in the world.

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey in April 2011, Knight stated that after the business went public, he handed Davidson a few hundred shares.

Phil Knight, the company’s founder, stepped down as chairman in June 2016 after 52 years at the helm. Knight’s departure from the Nike board of directors became effective at the end of June 2016.
