Her parents, Margaret and Frederic Flesher ran a furniture company named Flesher’s when she was born, but her family came from an agricultural background.
She grew up in Indianola, Iowa, but moved to Arkansas when she was eight years old, when her parents opened Peggy Frederic’s, a “wonderful, lovely business,” according to her.
