Pankaj Patel was born on March 16, 1953.
Indian pharmaceutical magnate Pankaj Patel owns the Cadila Healthcare company, which was co-founded in 1952 by his late father to make vitamins.
A pharmacy graduate, Patel joined the company in 1976 and, after a formal split between the two founding families, took over in 1995.
In Ahmedabad district, the $2 billion (revenue) generics manufacturer Cadila is headquartered.
His uncle, Chervil, has been the Managing Director of Cadila since July 2017.
The company also sells medications such as Remdesivir from Gilead to treat Covid-19. Clinical trials are ongoing for the Covid-19 vaccine, ZyCoV-D.
Education
Patel holds a Bachelor in Pharmacy and a Master in Pharmacy degree from the University of Gujarat and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Mumbai in Science and Law.
Career
He was Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, IISER, Kolkata, and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar in 2017.
He was also the Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.
In recognition of the growth of Cadila under his leadership, Patel has been declared the’ Best Pharma Man 2003 by the Foundation of Indian Industry and Economists.
Patel projected at the time that by 2005, Zydus Cadila would become India’s third-largest pharmaceutical company.
However, the fortunes of the organization were flipped, and by 2005, Patel dropped out of the list of richest Indians.
