He best known as Shibulal is an Indian business executive who was born on March 1, 1955, in Alappuzha, Kerala.

He was one of Infosys‘ seven founding members and served as its Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director.

On July 31, 2014, he stepped down as CEO and MD and was replaced by Dr. Vishal Sikka, Infosys’ first non-founder CEO.

For the year 2015, he is the President of the Infosys Science Foundation.

S.D. Shibulal, a cofounder of Infosys, runs his family office, Inventions Investment Management.

He stepped down as the company’s CEO in 2014, but he still has a minor interest in the company.

Shibulal was born in 1955 to an Ezhava family in Alappuzha.

“I was the only child, and my parents were very adamant that I stay at home and take up a teaching career,” he said in an interview about his early childhood.

Damodaran, his father, was an ayurvedic doctor, and Sarojini, his mother, worked for the state excise department.

Education

He attended S. D. College in Alappuzha after completing his education at T. D. High School in Alappuzha.

He went on to Maharaja’s College Ernakulam, which was then part of the University of Kerala, where he received his M.Sc. in Physics. In 1987, he earned a master’s degree in computer science from Boston University.

Career

Shibulal began his career in 1979 as a software engineer with Patni Computer Systems, one of India’s first software companies and systems integrators.

His Infosys journey started in 1981, when N. R. Narayana Murthy, Nandan Nilekani, N. S. Raghavan, S. Gopalakrishnan, K. Dinesh, Ashok Arora, and Shibulal co-founded “Infosys Consultants Pvt Ltd.” after resigning from Patni.

He was a key figure in Infosys’ growth, with an emphasis on project management activities and client partnerships in North America.

He played a key role in the creation of the Global Distribution Model, which set a new trend for outsourced IT service delivery.

Shibulal took a five-year sabbatical from Infosys in 1991 and joined Sun Microsystems in the United States. He was in charge of developing and launching Sun’s first e-commerce application between 1991 and 1996.

Shibulal founded and led the Internet Consultancy practice when he returned to Infosys in 1997, setting the way for the company’s transformation into a major global business consulting and IT services provider.

Shibulal has held a range of senior leadership positions, including Chief of Infosys Production and Distribution and Internet Consultancy practice, as well as Head of Worldwide Sales and Customer Fulfillment.

Shibulal took over as Chief Operating Officer from Kris Gopalakrishnan on June 22, 2007. In this position, he was responsible for growing competition, enhancing customer loyalty, increasing employee participation, and extending service depth. Shibulal was also named to the Infosys Board of Directors.

On April 30, 2011, the Infosys board of directors confirmed Shibulal’s appointment as the company’s new CEO and Managing Director. He took over his new job from Kris Gopalakrishnan on August 21, 2011.

Shibulal revealed Infosys 3.0 shortly after taking over, the plan that would push Infosys into the next step of its development.

Shibulal is focused on enhancing strategic relationships with customers, growing customer relevance, and transforming the company’s business model in order to meet Infosys’ ambitions of becoming the next generation multinational consultancy and IT services organization as Chief Executive Officer.

Shibulal declared his decision to step down as the company’s chief executive officer and managing director in April 2014. Shibulal revealed on June 12 that he would step down as CEO and MD of Infosys on August 1, 2014.

Shibulal co-founded Axilor Ventures, a venture capital company that focuses on emerging entrepreneurs, in 2014.

Private & early life

Shibulal met his wife Kumari at SD College, where he was an undergraduate.

Shruti, the couple’s daughter, and Shreyas, the couple’s son, are the couple’s only children.

Dismantling and reassembling electronic gadgets to find out how they function is one of his passions, and he enjoys listening to Carnatic classical music.

In a 2012 interview with the Financial Times, he claimed that New York is his favorite city.

Shibulal, along with his wife Kumari, daughter Shruti, and son Shreyas, owns nearly 2.2 percent of Infosys’ stock, which is valued at about $30 billion.
