Robert Toru Kiyosaki was born in Hilo, then part of the Hawaiian Territory, on April 8, 1947.
He was the oldest son of Ralph H. Kiyosaki (1919–1991), an academic instructor, and Marjorie O.
Kiyosaki (1921–1971), a licensed nurse, and was a member of the Yonsei generation of Japanese Americans.
He was followed by his three siblings, Emi and Beth Kiyosaki, and John Kiyosaki.

Education
Kiyosaki attended Hilo High School in Hilo, Hawaii, and graduated in 1965.
Following that, the majority of knowledge on Kiyosaki comes from speeches and seminars he has given throughout his life.
Senator Daniel K. Inouye nominated Kiyosaki for the United States Naval Academy and the United States Merchant Marine Academy, according to Kiyosaki.
He graduated in 1969 as a deck officer with a Bachelor of Science degree and a commission as a 2nd Lt. in the United States Marine Corps from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in New York.
After graduating from college, Kiyosaki worked as a third mate for Standard Oil’s tanker office.
After six months, Kiyosaki left to join the Marine Corps, where he served as a helicopter gunship pilot during the Vietnam War in 1972, earning an Air Medal.
While still in the service, Kiyosaki enrolled in a two-year MBA program at the University of Hawaii in Hilo in 1973. In June 1974, he was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps.
Career
Kiyosaki attended Erhard EST workshops in 1974, which he claims altered his life.
He founded the “Rippers” firm in 1977. The firm was the first to introduce nylon and velcro surfer wallets to the market. Runner’s World, Gentleman’s Quarterly, Success Magazine, Newsweek, and Playboy have all covered Kiyosaki and his goods. The company eventually went out of business.
Until June 1978, Kiyosaki worked as a sales associate for Xerox.
After that, Kiyosaki launched a retail company that produced T-shirts, hats, wallets, and bags for heavy metal rock bands. In 1980, the company went bankrupt.
Kiyosaki cofounded the Excellerated Learning Institute in 1985, a corporation that teaches entrepreneurship, investment, and social responsibility.
He married his second wife, Kim, about this time, who had previously made a real estate investment in Phoenix. Kiyosaki sold his education firm in 1994.
Kiyosaki’s first book, If You Want to Be Rich and Happy, Don’t Go to School, was released in 1992. He advised parents not to send their children to college and instead to pursue a career in real estate in his book.
Cashflow Technologies, Inc., a business and financial education firm that owns and maintains the Rich Dad and Cashflow brands, was founded by Kiyosaki in 1997. To promote his book, Kiyosaki teamed up with Amway. According to a Forbes interview, Kiyosaki’s major source of income is Rich Dad seminar franchisees.
