Singh was born on July 6, 1985, in Mumbai, to Sindhi parents Anju and Jagjit Singh Bhavnani.
Ritika Bhavnani, his older sister, is his only sibling.
During the Partition of India, his grandparents migrated to Bombay from Karachi, Sindh, in modern-day Pakistan.
Singh is the paternal grandson of Chand Burke, Sonam Kapoor’s maternal third cousin, and the daughter of actor Anil Kapoor and his wife Sunita Kakkar.

Education
After enrolling at Mumbai’s H.R. College of Commerce and Economics, Singh discovered that breaking into the film industry was not easy, as most opportunities went to people with a film background.
Singh turned to creative writing after deciding that acting was “too far-fetched.”
He moved to the United States and graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Career
Shanoo Sharma, the head of Yash Raj Films’ casting division, called Singh for an audition in January 2010.
It was for a lead role in their film Band Baaja Baaraat, a romantic comedy set in the world of wedding planning, they told him.
Aditya Chopra, the company’s vice president, later watched the audition tapes on video and was impressed by Singh’s acting, deciding that he was the right choice for the role of Bittoo Sharma, the film’s hero.
Maneesh Sharma, the writer-director, needed a little more persuasion, so he was called back for a few more auditions over the next 2 weeks before the three were fully persuaded of his abilities.
Singh was cast in the role of Bittoo after two weeks of practice, with Anushka Sharma playing the female lead.
Bittoo Sharma is portrayed by Singh as a typical Delhi child. He spent time with students on the Delhi University campus to prepare for the job.
Singh appeared alongside Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, and Priyanka Chopra in Zoya Akhtar’s ensemble comedy-drama Dil Dhadakne Do (2015), which was directed by her brother Farhan Akhtar and starred Singh as the younger sibling of a dysfunctional Punjabi business family.
After a year away from the screen, Singh returned to Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period drama Padmaavat (2018), co-starring Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor, to play Alauddin Khilji, a ruthless Muslim king.
