Rajinikanth was born Shivaji Rao Gaekwad on December 12, 1950, in Bangalore, Mysore State, to a Marathi family.
He was named after King Shivaji of the Maratha Empire and was raised speaking Marathi at home and Kannada outdoors.
His mother was a housewife, while his father was a police policeman named Ramoji Rao Gaekwad.
In a household with two older brothers (Satyanarayana Rao and Nageshwara Rao) and a sister, he is the youngest of four siblings (Aswath Balubhai).
After his father retired from work in 1956, he and his family relocated to the Bangalore neighborhood of Hanumantha Nagar and constructed a home there.
