Narayana Murthy was born on August 20, 1946, to a middle-class Brahmin family in Shidlaghatta, Chikkaballapura district, Karnataka.

Murthy is the father of two children: Rohan Murty, a son, and Akshata Murty, a daughter.

He is the father-in-law of Rishi Sunak, the new Chancellor of the Exchequer, and a British MP.

Education

He went to the National Institute of Engineering after graduating high school and earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1967. The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur awarded him a master’s degree in 1969.

Career

Narayana Murthy started his career as a Research Assistant for a faculty member at IIM Ahmedabad before becoming the chief systems programmer.

He developed and introduced a basic interpreter for Electronics Corporation of India Limited, and worked on India’s first time-sharing computer system.

Softronics is the name of the company he created. He joined Patni Computer Systems in Pune after the business collapsed after around a year and a half.

Murthy and his six tech professionals formed Infosys in 1981 with a Rs 10,000 start-up capital contribution from his wife Sudha Murthy.

He worked as a chief systems programmer at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad and Patni Computer Systems in Pune before joining Infosys (Maharashtra).

Murthy led Infosys as CEO for 21 years, from 1981 to 2002, before being replaced by co-founder Nandan Nilekani.

From 2002 to 2006, he served as the board’s chairman, during which he became the Principal Mentor.

He left the organization in August 2011 and was given the title of Chairman Emeritus.

Murthy is an independent director of the HSBC corporate board and has also worked on the boards of DBS Bank, Unilever, NDTV, and ICICI Bank.

He is a member of British Telecommunications’ Asia Pacific Advisory Board. He co-chaired the Davos World Economic Forum in 2005.

Murthy rejoined Infosys as Executive Chairman and Additional Director on June 1, 2013. Murthy revealed on the 12th of June 2014 that he would step down as Executive Chairman on the 14th of June.

He is currently the Chairman of the Public Health Foundation of India’s Governing Board.

He’ll stay on as Non-Executive Chairman until October 10th. Murthy was to be appointed Chairman Emeritus on the 11th of October.

Rohan began working at Infosys in June 2013 as his father’s executive assistant.

Sudha Murthy, his wife, is a social worker and author who works with the Infosys Foundation on philanthropic projects.

Murthy has two children: Rohan Murty, a son, and Akshata Murthy, a daughter.

Rohan joined Infosys in June 2013 as his father’s executive assistant. In June 2014, he left Infosys.

Rishi Sunak, the UK’s Chancellor of the Exchequer and Conservative MP for Richmond, Yorkshire, married Akshata in 2009.
