Career
In 1976, the 26-year-old Mittal began his first PT Ispat Indo steel factory in Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia, due to the curbing of steel production by the Indian government.
He is on the Executive Committee of the World Steel Association and is a member of the Global CEO Council of the Chinese People’s Association for Foreign Country Friendship, the Kazakhstan Foreign Investment Council, the International Business Council of the World Economic Forum, and the European Round Table of Industrialists.
He is also a member of the Cleveland Clinic’s board of trustees.
For a modest cost of IR£1, Mittal bought the Irish Steel mill in Cork, Ireland, from the government. It was shuttered a few years later, in 2001, and over 400 individuals were laid off.
Mittal has been a member of Goldman Sachs’ board of directors since 2008.
