Jim Thorpe Biography

Jim Thorpe was born on May 28, 1888, in Near Prague, Indian Territory.

Thorpe was born in US Indian Territory, but no birth certificate has been discovered.

In a 1943 comment to the newspaper, Thorpe mentioned Shawnee as his birthplace.

Both of Thorpe’s parents were of mixed descent.

Hiram Thorpe’s father was Irish and his mother was a Sac and Fox Indian.

Thorpe was reared as a Sac and Fox, and his given name, Wa-Tho-Huk, means “way lighted by a big flash of lightning” or “Bright Path” in English.

Thorpe felt unhappy after his mother died two years later as a result of problems after delivery. He went home to work on a horse ranch after repeated confrontations with his father.

Hiram Thorpe, the boy’s father, died of gangrene poisoning after being injured in a hunting accident later that year, leaving him orphaned.

Thorpe, who had previously dropped out of school, did so once more. Before returning to Carlisle School, he continued farm work for a few years.

Education

Thorpe and his twin brother, Charlie, both attended the Sac and Fox Indian Agency school in Stroud.

Thorpe had a habit of running away from school. To ensure that he did not run away again, his father enrolled him at the Haskell Institute, an Indian residential school in Lawrence, Kansas.

Thorpe returned to his father in 1904 at the age of sixteen and elected to attend Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

Career

Thorpe began his athletic career at Carlisle in 1907, when he went by the track in his street clothes and defeated all of the school’s high jumpers with an impromptu 5-foot 9-inch leap.

Thorpe’s physical prowess initially drew national attention in 1911.

Carlisle had a 27–6 triumph over the West Point Army team in 1912.

Olympic career

Two new multi-event categories, the pentathlon, and the decathlon were added to the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden.

Thorpe competed in both the pentathlon and the decathlon at the United States Olympic Trials.

During the Olympics, Thorpe was exceedingly busy. He participated in the long jump and high jump in addition to the decathlon and pentathlon.

Thorpe’s last event was the decathlon, which he won for the first (and only) time.

The medals were awarded to the athletes during the closing ceremonies of the games, as was customary at the time.

In the United States, Thorpe’s achievements were emulated. Thorpe was the major attraction in a ticker-tape procession on Broadway as the Olympic team returned.

Aside from his track and field exploits, Thorpe also took part in one of two exhibition baseball games at the 1912 Olympics, which featured two teams made up primarily of American track and field competitors.

In 1925, Miller filed for divorce from Thorpe, alleging desertion.

Thorpe married Freeda Verona Kirkpatrick in 1926. She was working for the baseball team’s manager at the time, for whom he was playing. Phillip, William, Richard, and John Thorpe were their four sons. Thorpe and Kirkpatrick had been married for 15 years before Kirkpatrick divorced her in 1941.
