Bullock was born in the Arlington, Virginia, neighborhood of Washington, D.C., on July 26, 1964, to Helga Mathilde Meyer, a German opera singer and vocal instructor, and John Wilson Bullock, an Army employee and part-time voice coach from Birmingham, Alabama.
When her father met her mother, he was stationed in Nuremberg as the commander of the Army’s Military Postal Service in Europe.
In Germany, her parents married. Bullock’s maternal grandfather was a Nuremberg-based German rocket scientist.
Her father worked for the Army Materiel Command before becoming a contractor for the Pentagon, so the family moved back to Arlington.
Gesine Bullock-Prado, Bullock’s younger sister, was the head of Bullock’s production firm, Fortis Films.
Bullock was reared in Nuremberg, Germany, and Vienna and Salzburg, Austria, for 12 years and speaks German fluently.
In Nuremberg, she had a Waldorf education. Bullock spent her childhood summers with her aunt Christl and cousin Susanne, the latter of whom subsequently married politician Peter Ramsauer, while her mother traveled on European opera tours.

Bullock was previously married to actor Tate Donovan, whom she met on the set of Love Potion No. 9. It was a three-year romance between them.
She dated football player Troy Aikman, as well as celebrities Matthew McConaughey and Ryan Gosling, in the past.
Bullock was in a private plane crash on a runway on December 20, 2000, however, she and the two crew members were unharmed. Blizzard conditions and pilot mistakes were to blame.
