Kate Elizabeth Winslet was born in Reading, Berkshire, on October 5, 1975, to parents Sally Anne and Roger John Winslet.

She is of British origin, with Irish and Swedish ancestry on her father’s side and Swedish ancestry on her mother’s.

Her mother worked as a babysitter and a waitress, while her father, a failed actor, performed odd jobs to help support the family.

Her maternal grandparents were also actresses and were the founders of the Reading Repertory Theatre. Winslet has two actress sisters, Anna and Beth, as well as a younger brother, Joss.

The family had low financial resources; they were sponsored by the Actors’ Charitable Trust and survived on free meal privileges.

When Winslet was 10 years old, her father had a terrible foot injury in a boating accident, making it difficult for him to work, and the family to face even greater financial difficulties.

Winslet has stated that her parents always made her feel loved and that they were a kind family.

She and her sisters performed in amateur theatrical performances at school and at Foundations, a local youth theatre.

Winslet had her first theatrical performance as Mary in her school’s Nativity show when she was five years old.

Winslet made her cinematic debut in 1991, two weeks after finishing her GCSE exams, as one of the major cast members of the BBC science fiction television series Dark Season.

Private & early life

Winslet began a love connection with actor-writer Stephen Tredre, who was twelve years older while filming Dark Season. He was a huge influence on her life, and they shared a flat in London. They split up in 1995 but stayed close until he died two years later of bone cancer.

Winslet met Jim Threapleton on the set of Hideous Kinky, where he worked as an assistant director, a year after Tredre’s death. Their daughter, Mia, was born in 2000, and they married in November 1998 at her primary school in Reading. In 2001, they divorced.

She met director Sam Mendes shortly after her divorce from Threapleton when he offered her a part in a play; she declined the offer but began dating him.

On the island of Anguilla, she married Mendes in May 2003, and their son, Joe, was born later that year.

Mendes and Winslet announced their separation in 2010 and divorced a year later, amid significant media speculation of an affair between Mendes and actress Rebecca Hall. She acknowledged being upset by the breakup but stated that she would continue to care for her children regardless of her marriage breakups. Following her divorce from Mendes, she dated model Louis Dowler for a short time.

During a house fire at Richard Branson’s Necker Island mansion in 2011, Winslet met his nephew Edward Abel Smith, who later became her third husband. Their son, Bear, was born the following year after they married in December 2012 in New York.
