Pom Klementieff was born on May 3, 1986, in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, to a Korean mother and a Russian-French father, Alexis Klementieff, who worked for the French government as a consul.
She is a French citizen with no Canadian citizenship because jus soli does not extend to diplomats’ children.
Klementieff spent one year in Canada before her family began traveling constantly owing to her father’s business.
Before arriving in France, they resided in Japan and the Ivory Coast.
Klementieff’s father died of cancer when she was five years old, and her mother suffered from schizophrenia and was unable to care for children, so she was raised by her paternal uncle and aunt.

Klementieff briefly entered law school following her uncle’s death to placate her aunt, but the professional route did not appeal to her.
She began performing at the Cours Florent theatrical school in Paris when she was 19 years old.
