The Harder They Fall review
A long intimidating line of straight-backed men and women all riding horses and facing the horizon of a Western plain.
It’s amazing how powerful a simple image like this can be. However, such visuals are intrinsic to the Western genre.
The Harder They Fall, directed by Jaymes Samuel and presently streaming on Netflix is a Black Western an oater with a predominantly Black cast many of whom are based on real-life historical figures.
We may be talking about John Ford’s beautiful visual discoveries in Monument Valley’s apparently every nook, or
Sergio Leone’s famous close-ups on warring sets of eyes on heated fingers eager for a rapid draw coming at us as if the camera itself were a pistol.
The genre has traditionally been defined by style in many senses, including clothes and, in particular the unique styles of its most iconic performers.
So much so that even when style appears to triumph over so-called substance, the end effect maybe not only captivating but also subversive and profound almost by mistake.
