Armstrong, a former Airbnb software developer, cofounded Coinbase with veteran currency trader Fred Ehrsam in San Francisco in 2012.
As a method of making research papers available to the public, Armstrong self-funded and launched ResearchHub, a scientific research site fashioned after the GitHub code repository.
Armstrong was featured in the American documentary The Rise and Rise of Bitcoin, which was released in 2014.
He was also the main character of the novel Kings of Crypto: One Startup’s Quest to Take Cryptocurrency Out of Silicon Valley and Onto Wall Street, which was published in 2020.
