Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla Inc., claimed that when his father Errol ran out of money in the 1990s, the businessman and his brother helped him out financially.

What Took Place: Musk’s remarks were part of a Twitter conversation that started with the Tesla CEO criticising Berkley professor Robert Reich for claiming that the Musk family owned an emerald mine in South Africa under the Apartheid regime.

“In the 1990s, Errol ran out of money. Since then, my brother and I have provided for him and his large family in South Africa on the condition that he not do terrible things. Sadly, he did act badly,” Musk said on Twitter.

After Reich posted a video on Wednesday challenging the self-made status of billionaires, Musk referred to him as a “idiot and a liar.” Reich asserted in the film that Musk was from a “rich family.”

On a radio programme in Australia in August, Errol declared that Elon’s sibling Kimbal was his “pride and delight.” The elder Musk also revealed some details about the family’s early years and claimed to have travelled extensively with his kids when they were still small.

Errol said, “We are a family that have been doing a lot of things for a long time,” when asked if he was proud of Elon. It’s not like we just started acting this way.
