Aavesham is a 2024 Indian Malayalam-language action comedy directed by Jithu Madhavan and produced by Nazriya Nazim and Anwar Rasheed under Fahadh Faasil and Friends and Anwar Rasheed Entertainments. Featuring Fahadh Faasil in the lead role, the film also stars Hipzster, Mithun Jai Shankar, Roshan Shanavas, and Sajin Gopu, with supporting performances by Midhutty and Mansoor Ali Khan. Sushin Shyam composed the film’s music, while Sameer Thahir handled the cinematography, and Vivek Harshan took charge of editing.

Released on April 11, 2024, Aavesham received widespread critical acclaim for its direction, performances (notably by Fahadh Faasil and Sajin Gopu), action sequences, cinematography, music, and technical craftsmanship. The film emerged as a blockbuster, grossing over ₹155 crores on a budget of ₹30 crores, making it the fourth highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time and one of the top-grossing Indian films of 2024.

Plot Summary

Aavesham follows Aju, Bibi, and Shanthan, who move to Bangalore, Karnataka from Kerala to pursue aeronautical engineering. They opt for BK Hostel, run by the college clerk BK, believing it offers more freedom. Their carefree life takes a turn when they clash with Kutty, a senior student. This encounter leads to their abduction and beating by Kutty and his gang, only to be offered friendship later. Humiliated, Aju seeks revenge, leading them to befriend Ranga, a prominent Malayali-Kannadiga gangster who is always clad in white.

A drunken night leads Ranga to take the trio to his old house where they uncover a dark secret. Disappointed by Ranga’s passive approach, Bibi’s confrontation provokes Ranga to publicly thrash Kutty and his gang during the college Holi celebration. Though facing expulsion, they are granted a second chance. Their bond with Ranga disrupts their studies, and their lives spiral as Ranga kills two gang members who tried to leave.

Kidnapped by Reddy, Ranga’s former boss, they escape to Tumkur, avoiding Ranga’s search. Their academic focus returns until they plan to confront Ranga with Reddy’s help. Betrayed yet victorious in his battle against Reddy’s gang, Ranga reveals his loneliness and the trio’s significance. The film concludes with Aju and Bibi failing an exam, while Shanthan passes, and Ranga, now in black, humorously punishes them outside the college.

In March 2023, Jithu Madhavan announced his second film with Fahadh Faasil, co-produced by Fahadh Faasil and Friends with Anwar Rasheed Entertainments. Initially rumored to be a spin-off of Romancham, Madhavan clarified that Aavesham is a standalone film. The technical team included Sushin Shyam, Sameer Thahir, Vivek Harshan, and Ashwini Kale as music composer, cinematographer, editor, and production designer, respectively.

Fahadh Faasil, portraying the Bangalore-based gangster Ranga, adopted a unique look with a thick handlebar mustache and white attire. Sajin Gopu, Mansoor Ali Khan, and Ashish Vidyarthi played significant roles, alongside newcomers Pranav Raj, Hipzster, Mithun Jai Shankar, Roshan Shanavas, and Midhutty. Principal photography began in Bangalore and wrapped up in November 2023.

The film’s soundtrack, composed by Sushin Shyam with lyrics by Vinayak Sasikumar, features nine songs performed by independent artists. Released by Think Music on April 19, 2024, the soundtrack was preceded by singles “Jaada”, “Galatta”, “Illuminati”, and “Mathapithakkale”.

Aavesham premiered on April 11, 2024, coinciding with the Eid al-Fitr and Vishu weekend. Initially set for Onam and Christmas 2023, the release was postponed to the first quarter of 2024. The film was highly anticipated and achieved significant pre-sale earnings, despite initial distribution disputes with PVR INOX multiplex chains, which were resolved shortly after the release. Garnering a U/A certificate from the CBFC, Aavesham had a final runtime of 157 minutes, with minor edits for the Kuwait release.

Box Office Performance

On its opening day, Aavesham garnered ₹3.9 crores globally, securing the top position among simultaneous releases like Varshangalku Shesham and Jai Ganesh. The film’s earnings surged due to positive word of mouth, leading to a substantial domestic collection of ₹18.75 crores on the Vishu holiday. By April 23, 2024, Aavesham had achieved a remarkable worldwide gross of ₹100 crores.
